To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling
– 2 Thessalonians 1:11a
The calling of the gospel is so great that our lives must demonstrate the worth of such a calling. A half-hearted, undevoted, lukewarm Christianity pitifully portrays the precious pearl of great price—Jesus Christ. He was not half-hearted in his love toward us. He was not undevoted in his zeal to save. He was not lukewarm to accomplish our redemption. No—his love, zeal, and mission drove him to the cross. This is the worth of the gospel.
Here Paul prays for the Thessalonian church, that God would make them “worthy of his calling.” How does God do this? Often through trial and testing. He must test our faith, as He did for this fledgling church in Thessalonica, so that our lives would be “worthy of his calling.”
Is the gospel this precious to you? Do you want to make your life count? At the end of your life, will your last breath be the words, “Lord Jesus, I have lived my life worthy of your calling. Receive me now into your presence.”
